When a football analysis file is empty: Lessons on honesty for football writers

I received a nine-dimensional football analysis file. Every dimension displayed N/A. No team, no player, no match, no statistic. At first, I was startled. Then I realized this empty file was more honest than many confident sports articles published every day. For more than twenty-five years of watching football, I have seen narratives built on emotion rather than evidence. Players become stars overnight. Teams are condemned after two defeats. Transfer rumors are presented as facts. During that time, I learned to respect the courage of saying 'I do not have enough data.' The file was empty on tactics, finance, results, league context, regulations, dressing room, risk, media hype, and industry impact. Such emptiness is valuable. It prevents false conclusions. It protects the audience. A writer who does not know something should say so clearly. Silent heroes do not need goals to be remembered. Likewise, a journalist does not need constant hot takes to be respected. Respect is earned through honesty and verifiable information. If we keep producing content without evidence, we lose the reader's trust. And once trust is lost, it rarely returns. I believe the gaps in data are not failures. They are places where true stories are waiting to be discovered. We should fill them with truth, not with noise.
