When receiving a sports analysis document, the first thing I do is not read the conclusion, but check the raw data. Recently, a document labeled “table tennis” came into my hands with every conclusion field marked: insufficient information, cannot assess. Thirteen analysis sections, from technique to head-to-head records to injury risk, were all empty. At first glance, this looks like a faulty product. But if you look closely, it is a mirror reflecting a chronic problem in Vietnamese table tennis: we are consuming emotion, while the world has already moved on to reading spreadsheets.
Vietnamese table tennis has had memorable moments over the past decade. There are SEA Games medals, thrilling national finals, and young players called up to the national team. But when I search for publicly available match data, the amount is almost zero. Nobody records serve placement, the frequency of service-return errors in a deciding set, or the winning percentage when an opponent serves short to the middle of the table. Spectators only receive a story told in scores, while coaches need a story told in frequency, trajectory, and timing.
A widespread belief is that table tennis is a sport of skillful hands and feel. That idea is not wrong, but it only speaks about the visible part. If feel is the language, data is the grammar. A coach can see that his player is making many errors at the end of a set, but what can he do if he does not know which serves preceded those errors, what spin was involved, and where the opponent placed the ball? In football, people use xG to describe shot quality. In basketball, they use effective field goal percentage to value shots. In table tennis, we need something similar: a set of indicators good enough to separate a beautiful shot from an effective shot.
The empty report becomes even more meaningful in the context of modern table tennis. At the Asian level, leading teams rely less on the naked eye. They record every table from multiple angles and label every rally. Which server mostly serves to the opponent’s forehand zone? Which player tends to flick the serve with the backhand before the second bounce? Each variable is coded, and each code is tested over hundreds of matches. When one player loses in the fifth set, the coaching staff do not say that the opponent was lucky. They open the data table, look at the final seven points, and find the three shots that forced their player into the weakest defensive area.
For Vietnamese table tennis, the gap is not in talent. I have watched youth tournaments in northern and southern Vietnam, and I have seen many young players with astonishing raw qualities. The problem is that no one stores the developmental path of those players systematically. A fifteen-year-old player beats a senior player at a local tournament. Media call it a miracle. Coaches nod and say the boy is gifted. But no one answers the key question: why did he win, and can that playing style be repeated against a different opponent? Without an answer, that victory becomes an isolated dot. It teaches the national team nothing new, and it does not help the boy understand what he needs to improve.
A minimum data model for table tennis does not need to be ambitious. I imagine it as a table with five drawers. The first drawer is serve data: serve type, landing point, estimated spin, and winning percentage immediately after that serve. The second drawer is service-return data: direct return, long return, short return, forehand or backhand return, and the error rate in each situation. The third drawer is third-ball and fourth-ball data, because modern table tennis is often decided in the first two exchanges. The fourth drawer is unforced-error data, classified by set, score, and pressure of the point. The final drawer is fitness and movement data: distance covered, number of direction changes, and the degree of slowdown in the fourth and fifth sets. With only these five drawers filled, a table tennis match can begin to tell its real story.
Imagine two players winning the same number of total points. One wins because five serves went directly past the opponent at decisive moments. The other wins because the opponent made more unforced errors late in sets. Both advance to the next round, but their tactical meanings are completely different. If the coach only looks at the score, he will never know whether his player should continue to rely on a sidespin serve or develop a longer game. Data does not judge the aesthetic value of a beautiful shot. It only judges the repeatability of that shot and its impact on the result. A single brilliant rally may bring the whole arena to its feet, but if it only appears once in a hundred matches, it is not a reliable foundation for building a style.
The empty report also reveals a blind spot in how we see injury risk. Without movement-load data, nobody knows how many meters a young player runs every week, how many balls he hits in each session, or how well he recovers after long matches. We only see a player missing a tournament and call it a sporting injury. But many table tennis injuries come from an imbalance between training and recovery. If a coach records that a player’s error rate rises by thirty percent after the hundred-and-fiftieth ball in practice, he has an early signal to adjust the training plan. Without those numbers, the only option is to wait for the injury to appear and then blame fate. In professional sports, fate is often only a name for a variable we forgot to track.
I do not believe in fairy tales. I believe in xG and the chain of events leading to a goal. Table tennis is no different: every rally is an event connected to another event. A short serve forces a defensive return; the return creates a third-ball opportunity; and the attack can end the point. If one link breaks, the whole chain collapses. Data helps us see which link breaks first, and that matters far more than knowing who won or lost.
One common misconception is that Vietnamese table tennis cannot compete with China, Japan, or South Korea because of body type or facilities. That story sounds reasonable, but it does not explain why countries with similar conditions have progressed through more structured systems. The biggest gap is not height or investment cost. It is the way each country reads the match. A training center with one data analyst can create more value than a center with ten new tables but no performance indicators. Data does not replace technique; it helps technique become analyzed and improved in a purposeful way.
If we look at developed table tennis nations, they do not use data to turn table tennis into a mechanical sport. They use it to understand the personality of each athlete. A player who likes a fast rhythm needs different drills from one who likes loop-spinning from mid-distance. A player who can perform brilliantly in the second set but fades in the fourth needs a different fitness program from someone who stays steady throughout the match. Data does not flatten personalities. On the contrary, it allows coaches to design a pathway that fits each player, instead of imposing a single template on everyone.
The empty report also raises a question for Vietnamese sports media. When a table tennis match is worth retelling, the story often revolves around beautiful rallies and comeback victories. That is not wrong, but it lacks depth. A comeback is not a miracle from thin air. It is the result of a player changing his service return, or the opponent starting to miss more because of fatigue. If journalists could access data showing when the rhythm changed, sports stories would become far more compelling, because they would show that an athlete is not only fighting the opponent, but also fighting the limits of his own tactics.
I have often heard that Vietnamese table tennis lacks a replacement generation. I am not sure that diagnosis is accurate. Perhaps we do not lack talent; we lack an observation system sensitive enough to detect talent early. Without data from hundreds of youth matches, we can only rely on outstanding results from a few tournaments. A young player who loses in the group stage of a national event but has better service-return indicators than all his peers could be a diamond in the rough. If nobody looks at those indicators, he will just remain a name with a low ranking. If data exists, a scout will ask a new question: why would someone with such solid service returns lose matches? Maybe he is weak in the third ball. Maybe he does not know how to finish points. Maybe he needs more time to mature tactically. All of those hypotheses can be tested with data.
Every tactic is only a hypothesis until data delivers the verdict. That statement applies not only to football or basketball. It applies to every sport, including those considered dependent on individual skill. Some believed table tennis was too fast, the ball too small, and spin too complex to be encoded into data. But modern technology records thousands of frames per second and tracks the ball’s landing point with millimeter accuracy. If another country can do that for its athletes, there is no reason a Vietnamese training center cannot start by keeping manual notes in a spreadsheet and then gradually move to an automated system.
Where should we start? I would not wait for a grand revolution. Each national team and each youth academy can choose one tournament each year and begin recording the five minimum data sets mentioned above. After the season, they compare the data with actual results and let the data reveal their blind spots. The ocean of data is not for those who are afraid of getting wet, but that does not mean you must jump straight into the sea on the first day. You can begin with a small pool, learn how numbers feel, and then move into deeper water. The key is to start, and to start with the right attitude: numbers are not meant to decorate a news story; they are meant to help people make better decisions.
Vietnamese table tennis is at a turning point. If it continues to treat sports analysis as reviewing video and sensing form, it will keep receiving empty reports for many years. But if it accepts that a match begins before the first ball is tossed, when a coach sits with the opponent’s data table, the opportunity becomes wider. Numbers never lie; only the reading can be wrong. And the worst thing is not reading numbers incorrectly. The worst thing is having no numbers to read while still confidently making conclusions. A report with full data but a mistaken conclusion can be rewritten. An empty report cannot be fixed, because it never actually started.
