Black Notley B's promotion ambition in the Braintree Table Tennis League

In the Braintree Table Tennis League division two, a recently relegated team often becomes an instant promotion contender. Black Notley B fit that mold with Neil Freeman, who posted a 60% win rate in division one last season, and Rev Matthews, who managed 86% in division two. Former men's singles champion Steve Kerns will also feature in about half of their matches, giving the side arguably the strongest squad in the division. Sudbury Strollers, runners-up last season, are the main challengers. Dave Fiddeman finished with a 92% win rate, while John Colvin had 75%. However, their title hopes depend on depth and how often backup players step in – a factor often underestimated at local level. Division three looks more open. Ethan Collins, just 12, already holds three cadet titles and one junior boys' title. At Rayne D, Sai Suresh (14) and Aryaman Singh (13) will experience a baptism in senior league play under the watchful eye of league coach Keith Martin. JJ Calisin (18), meanwhile, is scheduled to step up to division one at Christmas. In such leagues, squad depth and availability matter more than star power. Black Notley B only relies on Kerns for half their matches; Sudbury Strollers are still searching for a reliable third player. As always, when the arena is quiet, the data speaks.
